I believe in supporting the people and culture in my community.
Instead of donating money, I donate blood and time. Giving blood is quick,
easy, and renewable. Time—well—it’s not renewable, but it is worthwhile.

I mentor foster kids. I volunteer with Voices for Children as a court-appointed advocate for teenagers who have been permanently placed in the Juvenile Dependency System. I spend time with the children and also communicate with their teachers, caregivers, social workers, lawyers, and therapists to gauge how the children are doing academically, socially, and emotionally.

I teach music. I am a certified teacher for Music Together, an early childhood music program based on the fundamental idea that we are all musical from the time we are born. As a music-making model for both the children and their caregivers, my role is to engage them in a wide variety of musical experiences.

I teach writing. I put together a writing enrichment program for fifth graders at a local elementary school. During our weekly small-group workshops, these ten-year-old imaginations create clever, gorgeous writing.

I go to plays. I support local theatre because there is something magical about a live performance. Whether it’s an avant-garde piece in a small theatre or a big, flashy Broadway musical, I’m lucky to live in San Diego where quality theatre is plenty and diverse. These are some of my favorites:

San Diego Repertory Theatre
The Old Globe
La Jolla Playhouse
Mo’Olelo Performing Arts Company

As any good writer should, I read and write a lot. I read for information, inspiration,
entertainment, and escape. And, beyond my business writing, I try to find time for
other outlets, including personal narrative essays, short fiction, and my blog, Hatchlings.
